I became a mother to a son.

My only son.

Today, October 30th, is Joshua’s 17th birthday. Happy Birthday to you Joshua!  You do a mother proud.

(first birthday)

My boy with the four sisters.

(as a side note, this was our very first ever digital photo, almost 10 years ago!)

He’s survived through playing barbies with his big sister (they are 26 months apart) by always playing with “Ken” and the barbie cars. He learned young, to compromise. Ha! They have always been, and still are, the best of friends.

(when they aren’t trying to kill one another… play fighting only of course!)

He’s not only a great ‘little’ brother, but a wonderful ‘big’ brother too.

He’s survived through many tea parties, at one time we made them a weekly part of our schooling. As long as we had goodies to eat, he was happy to sit with us and even read or listen to some poetry at times.

People always ask him how he likes having four sisters. Odd question in a way, but one that’s been asked often.

I always told people that I was pretty sure he wouldn’t mind having four sisters once they were bringing friends home when he would be a teen. That rang true sooner rather then later. He’s now been in a relationship for quite a while with one of his older sister’s friends, Heather, whom he’s known since he was just 8 years old and Heather was 10.  Unfortunately it’s mostly a long distance relationship since she now lives in Oregon USA and we live in BC Canada. Their relationship is strong though, and something to be proud of. They are both wonderful young adults with good heads on their shoulders.

Joshua went to Oregon to visit her this past spring for Heather’s sisters wedding.

and she came to visit Joshua this past summer.

I see a bright future for Joshua. He’s a great guy. Spends his time working two jobs, one in a mechanics shop and the second one for an excavator company, all while working on two grades of schooling in one year so he can jump into a mechanics college course next year. On top of all that, he also works for several of our neighbors doing everything from yard work, to painting and everything in between. He’s got a great head on his shoulders and knows what he wants out of life.

In his spare time, he cuts wood.

Makes knives from bars of steel and wood or antler, along with the leather cases.

Enjoys working on his truck.

Riding his horse and snapping photos of others riding horses.

He likes to work, a lot. He always has. Since he could walk. No, since he could crawl. He’s done an awful lot of work around the homestead along with my husband.

We feel it’s a very important part of becoming a good solid adult, growing up to realize you have great value in this world and to be proud of the life you’re living.

If it sounds like I’m bragging, I am. Joshua has lots to be proud of.
