The other day, Sunday actually, one of our twins almost choked to death. Unfortunately, I was personally ill prepared for such an ordeal and completely forgot how to do the Heimlich manouver. Thankfully, even though my dear hubby had already left the house, he had forgotten something and got back out of his truck and heard a strange sound. He knew the sound wasn’t right, and then he heard my son yell MOM! so he came running.

I’m so thankful it all turned out ok. My two eldest and I are going to be taking first aid, and soon. I should have been better prepared but honestly, I spent many many years rehearsing in my mind EVERY day what to do in case a child choked. I have always been around children, and many of them, as I did in home daycare for many years while the eldest two were little. Then, once our twins, our youngest children, got to be about 5 or 6, I guess I stopped rehearsing it in my mind on a daily basis and got comfortable. Who expects a 10 year old to choke that severely?

But, the biggest lesson here is to be learned from my daughter, Shaylah, who choked.

Shaylah was SO thankful and happy that she survived the whole ordeal that she made a decision right then and there! She’s decided to no longer be “grumpy”. You see, Shaylah has always been “the grumpy one”. I don’t feel bad calling her that ‘publicly’ because she’ll admit it’s true. lol It’s not new news to her. lol I can show you MANY photos of my gorgeous girl with the great big blue eyes being all grumpy looking.

Well she’s decided to change all that, and so far, she’s really doing it!

So, the lesson here is: If a ten year old can change her ways so dramatically, can I, can you? That’s what lesson I’m taking out of all this (besides needing to get my first aid and refresh myself on how to save my child’s life!).
