• Random photos from the early years.

I just can’t seem to think of anything to write today, no inspiration, which is kind of rare for me.

So… I thought I’d browse through my old photos and share a few.

I have 1655 PAGES of photos on flickr.

    That’s 29,783 photos.

I think I “might” just be able to find a few to post. Hee hee.

However, my kids might not like me after this!

    Alesia
Our eldest, at about 13 years of age, so about 6 years ago?

    000_1170
Joshua, about the same time, so he would have been about… 11 years of age. Such a sweet boy, isn’t he?

    My girls 1 & 2
Alesia and Elsa, September of 2006. Wow, Elsa is now TALLER then Alesia, and taller then myself I might add.

Now here’s a favorite photo of mine! Joshua was trying VERY hard not to be caught by the camera, but I got him anyways.

    Son
So cute! He’ll hate that I said that, but it’s true.

    Twins 5
Dear sweet twin sisters. The best of friends!

When I found out we were expecting twins, I just knew it was two girls. I could just feel it.

    My girl 2
Elsa, isn’t she just so cute too?

So cute that she almost towers over me now. The year I snapped this photo she went from being about 4 foot nothing to over 5 foot tall in a matter of about… ohhh… 6 short months?! Now she’s just barely under 5’5, yet has smaller feet then me!

I should actually measure her again today, it’s been a couple of days so she’s probably grown over 5’5 now. It’s like she just can’t stop growing!

I gave birth to this ‘once upon a time’ pipsqueak!

Have I ever mentioned she was a breech birth?

Yep. No c-section either. I won’t get into anymore details right now. Hee hee.

    Speaking of growing…

    IMGP0605

Just who is that scrawny boy over there with those tiny little girls?

That can’t be my son, the boy who’s now pretty much 6 foot tall and no longer scrawny?!

This is our favorite swimming ‘hole’. I have many many photos of the kids here.

The photo above was taken on Oct. 3rd 2006. We had just heard about this place and drove by to check it out. It was SO warm, and SO beautiful, that we could not resist dipping our toes in.

    IMGP0420

The kids then couldn’t resist swimming, BUT, they had on fall/winter clothing.

I happened to have a bag of clothing designated for the thrift store in the van, so they rifled through it and found some shorts and tops to wear. Ha ha!

    It was a fun day.

    IMGP0810

And now we have many memories because we set aside our plans for the day, and stopped for a moment.

We went off on a rabbit trail.

    IMGP0851

We follow quite a few rabbit trails.

    Quite often.

I think it’s just about time we went back to our favorite swimming hole again. Hopefully the weather will warm  up soon!

And the next time I have no inspiration, I guess I’ll rummage through my photos again. I only made it through the last 6 or 8 pages out of 1655!

I think I may be able to find a little more inspiration next time!

  • Children’s photos

No, I’m not referring to photos of children, but rather, photos TAKEN by children.

You really gotta love the peek into their perspective!

The other week I spent some time moving photos. I was trying to clean up my computer, as it’s OVER loaded with photos and I’ve lost photos once before, and don’t care to go through a repeat. I still mourn each time a photo comes to mind, and I realize it’s lost, forever.

    Anywho…

I was transferring photos over and thought it might be fun to share a few.

These are some of my girls horse photos. These are their Shleich horses.

They collect them. All the kids do actually, even the older two. hee hee

I love how these were posed as a family. So sweet.

Lots of mama’s and babies too.

Love the artistic sepia affect of some of these.

Having raised one of our own foals, with the help of her mama of course, makes playing with mama and baby horses all that much more meaningful.

    Lions and tigers, oh my!

And thus, is a look into the photographic life of a child!

  • Children and chores, a review for you.

First off, I want to say that this is not a ‘paid’ review. No one asked me to do this review. The website I am sharing doesn’t even know about me, or that I’m even reviewing their product. This is strictly me sharing something that came across my desk, that’s working for us, and that I think is worthy of being shared! It’s been very helpful to us! Best of all, it’s FREE to use.

Raising five children leads to lots of extra chores on the homestead.

Add in the fact that every single one of  us loves animals and… you’ve got even more chores.

The work doesn’t bother me. I don’t think it bothers any one of us.

What does bother me though, is when things are supposed to get done, and don’t.

We are a busy family. It’s just a fact.

With the older two working aprox. 6 days a week outside the home, yet not being able to drive alone yet (both are on their way to their full licence but it feels like it’s taking soooo long. I think dear hubby and I will do a great big happy dance when one of them does the final test and is on their own with driving! Then we’ll do an even bigger happy dance with the next one! ha!) the busyness of two businesses, homeschooling, all the animals and everything they require, having our house on the market and then you’ve got the typical busyness of just trying to keep everything under control, and everyone fed, well…

    It gets busy.

It also gets very hard to keep on top of everything, and everyone, all the time.

As a mother, I find that to be the most exhausting part of it all. Trying to make sure everything gets done, and everything is taken care of, and nothing is forgotten.

With the kids growing up, I also feel like this shouldn’t even be much of my own responsibility any longer. They have brains of their own, which can be used for such things as:

    • remembering to feed the dogs
    • letting out the chickens
    • brushing the dogs
    • brushing their own teeth (although they’ve mastered this one, thankfully. hee hee)
    • cleaning up the doggy doo
    • cleaning their room
    • having a bath…
You get the picture. If you’re a parent, you know the drill.
Recently, a friend sent through a link to a website. I browsed the site, clicked a few things, thought it looked ‘neat’, but it was right before I went away on our trip, so I kind of set it aside, mentioned it to the kids and said we’d look into when I got back…
Well… I got back a few weeks ago, and although it kept being brought up, I kept forgetting about it.
Until last week. The three younger girls have been keen to try out this new site. It’s a job chart, a chore chart, ONLINE.
You can check it out here: http://www.myjobchart.com/
    We LOVE it!
There’s all sorts of cool features.
The main one being the fact that you, the parent, can type in any and every job you would like your child to do. Anything from brushing their teeth, to having a bath, to cleaning the bird-cage.
You can set up when it’s to be done, day time, night-time. You can set up which days of the week, or every day, etc..
You can also give your children points, however many points, you want for each job.
A feature I really like, is a notepad for leaving notes for each child, and then they can reply with a note back!
Yesterday I left notes for each child, and was pleasantly surprised to find replies from them in my inbox! It’s a great way to keep everyone encouraged!
I’m using the job chart with the younger three. Shaylah and Julia are 11 years of age, and Elsa is 13. The twins fell in love with it immediately, and got right to work and have kept up with things. I receive an email telling me when they’ve completed their entire list for that day.
Elsa, who has aspergers, at first said, “I’m not doing the stupid job chart!” then as she watched her sisters running back and forth to the computer to check off everything they have completed, getting all excited with each completed task, she reconsidered.
She hasn’t finished her whole list each day, but she’s actually enjoying it, and doing it, so I’m not going to complain. She’s being motivated, something that doesn’t happen very easily.
Another great feature, you can print off a pdf of your children’s charts so they don’t have to keep going to the computer to see what else they need to accomplish that day. Elsa prefers the print out, and then just going to the computer later on to mark off what she did. The twins prefer to leave their charts up on the kids computer, and just running back over each time to check things off as they go and watch their points add up.

I will add, one thing that does not appeal to me about the site is the advertising, and the suggestions of what your children might like from amazon.com etc., BUT, I do understand that this same advertising is what keeps this site FREE. I do not like paying to try out a site, only to find after a few days, weeks, or even months, that it’s just not worth what I’m paying because it’s just not working for us. The site being free made it possible for us to find out we DO like this one, and we still don’t have to pay!

I’m happy to say, it’s working for us. So for that reason, I’ll put up with some annoying ads trying to entice me into buying things for my children.
And as Shaylah just said to me, “I’m glad you found this! Now I can do all my jobs, and play the rest of the day without forgetting anything!”
Maybe I need to set up a job chart for me…
  • Our dogs.

I post quite a few photos of my tiniest lap dog.

Teagan, our longcoat Chihuahua, who was born a ‘runt’ and has only reached 2 and a  half pounds at his full size.

Teagan is hard to resist with the camera.

    He’s just so darn cute,

    and tiny,

    and he’s always with me.

However, we do have three other dogs.

    dogs julia

    Shiloh, Jasper, and Levi.

Shiloh and Levi are Shetland Sheepdogs, or most commonly known as, Shelties. Shiloh is Levi’s uncle.

Shiloh is almost 9  years old. Levi just turned 7 in February.

    Shelties are EXCELLENT family dogs.

They are ‘herding’ dogs. So they really enjoy ‘herding’ the children.

Shiloh is Joshua’s dog, and where ever Joshua is, so also will you find Shiloh.

    A boy and his dog
Older photo, Joshua’s grown quite a bit since this was taken!

Levi is not really any specific person’s dog, he’s really simply the “girls” dog.

Where ever the girls are, so also will you find Levi.

    4 Wheeler/Dog/Kids/Riding boots

    Always.

To me, having dogs is invaluable. On a five acre hobby farm, I like to know where the kids are at all times. If I can’t see the children, but don’t really want to disturb them, I simply call either of the two shelties and which ever direction they come from, that’s how I know where the kids are. Levi will come from the direction the girls are in, Shiloh from where ever Joshua is. If Shiloh is asleep by the workshop door, I know Joshua is in the shop. If Levi is over at the barn, I know the girls are at the barn.

They are also really great at alerting us when ANY ONE, or ANY THING, comes on the property.

    Shiloh

They’re also very cute, and great companions.

Jasper, is also very cute, and our other ‘lap’ dog.

    IMGP2573

    Jasper is a Pappillon.

We haven’t quite figured out Jasper’s full “purpose” here on the Homestead, other then to keep everyone company, and to often keep everyone annoyed. Ha!

He can be quite yappy, a tad spoiled, and he’s very high strung compared to our other three dogs who are all very relaxed and easy going.

Jasper is almost 3 years old now and he’s just recently begun behaving when we have company. Before, every time someone would stop by, he would bark and bark and bark and bark and bark… you get the picture. No matter what we did, he wouldn’t stop. Mind you, we don’t get a lot of company so it’s been a hard habit to break him of with no way to ‘practice’.

But finally, just recently, he’s learned how to settle down when ‘strangers’ come into the house. He still starts off barking like crazy but at least now he will settle down after a bit, and even say hello to our company.

    IMGP3698

You wouldn’t know it from this photo that he’s such a nervous ninny!

He is however, a constant companion to us all.

    DSC_9940

    He’s wonderful with the kids.

    Elsa & Jasper

And according to him, he kept me safe at night while dear hubby is away this winter!

    He’s the Great Protector!

    DSC_9945

Jasper and Teagan are both ‘protector’ breeds.

Originally bred to guard kings jewels, and to be companions.

Good thing we have these two protectors.

You just never know when someone may attempt to’steal all our jewels…

Most of all though, why we love our dogs, is for moments just like this one.

    joshua

There’s not much sweeter in life then a boy and his dogs.

  • Tie Dye Easter Eggs

We finally got around to Tie Dyeing our Easter Eggs this morning!

Well it IS Easter Monday right? So it’s officially STILL Easter. So we’re not ‘truly’ late, right?

    Cast of characters.

    • silk ties found at the local thrift store
    • eggs, some from our own hens, others from a broken carton our daughter brought home (she works at a grocery store)
    • vinegar
    • non-reactive pot
    • measuring tools
    • white cloth (not shown, we simply used the white cloth from inside the ties themselves, waste not, want not!)
We decided to blow the yokes out of our eggs so we wouldn’t have to waste them and so we could keep the decorated eggs!
We used a cake tester to break the yokes inside. I figured it’d be easier to blow them out this way.
Easy, & blowing yoke, is an oxymoron. Or a myth.
It doesn’t exist. We were all light headed, feeling goofy and giggly by the time we were done all 16 eggs!
We cut our silk tie fabrics into small pieces, wet them, and smoothed them onto our eggs.
There was some great creativity going on!
The funny thing is, I was being VERY careful with my eggs.
Cutting neat little strips, and trying to get REAL creative and keep everything real nice and neat, yet my eggs turned out the most boring.
The kids layered their fabrics a lot more, and got way more color on their eggs and they turned out fabulous!
So keep that in mind, take a tip from a child, go crazy and layer, layer, layer!
Then we used twine (which we always have in great supply, horses=twine) to wrap the white fabric from within the ties, around the eggs.
Boiled them all for about 30 minutes. Since they were hollow, they kept floating to the top so we had to keep a lid on the pot.
    All cooked!
    We unwrapped each one.
It was a little like Christmas!
Now we have memories of Easter 2011 to hang onto for forever!
I just need to find a box and lots of packing peanuts to keep them safe once we’re done ooh-ing and aahh-ing over them for the next while.
  • Easter Egg Hunt & contest winner

We decided to have our Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday since it was calling for rain on Sunday and Monday.

I thought I’d share a few photos. Just the three youngest went hunting this year. Alesia was at work and Joshua helped Graydon and I hide eggs.

This is the ONLY time they are allowed in my flower beds…

    The hunt was ON!

I so badly wanted to hide just one egg in the hen house, but Graydon and Joshua said that would be GROSS. I thought it’d be funny for one of the girls to find it the next time they go looking for eggs in there. I might still do it anyways, just for fun. hee hee

When I saw this next photo, I told Graydon that this is what it’s all about. Why I love country living so much. We have photos of the children with horses in the background, dogs running beside them, nature all around them. I love it and never take that for granted. It’s a wonderful way to grow up.
When I was younger, from about the age of 6 until about 11, we lived on a small acreage and since that time I always loved the country, and always wanted to get back to that type of living.

When you have an acreage, there’s no telling where you might find eggs.

The kids have been discussing what it might like to have an Easter Egg Hunt on an even larger farm. They were pretty excited at the thought, and discussed it in length. About how they could possibly do their egg hunt on horse back and mom and dad could go on the quad/atv to hide the eggs all over the hundreds of acres and then they could spend the entire day hunting for them everywhere on their horses. Ah, the joyous thoughts of children. To dream a little dream…

The little 2 pound terror thought it was all a lot of fun to watch!

He couldn’t resist trying to get right in there.

    Something smells like candy!

Everyone should have a tiny Teagan to love.

Or a larger dog like Jasper.

Elsa doesn’t like her photo taken, so she put Jasper in front of her face instead.

So I sneak around getting other shots of her anyways.

Sometimes I even get a tiny bit of ‘face’ in the photo!

Even our horses behave like big ‘pets’. Raiah wanted to know what all the fuss was about.

Then everyone else had to come and see too.

And that was our Easter Egg Hunt.

The day was so gorgeous and felt so warm after a long wet and cool winter, that the three younger girls stole the kiddie pool from the chicken run and used it to play in all afternoon while I worked.

In the evening we had our first bon fire of the season and roasted our dinner over our fire.

    Roasting Marshmallows with Daddy

Then Joshua challenged me to try out his new pellet gun, a pistol, which he had bought that day. I’ve never shot a pistol before, but I’ve shot a 22 many many times, since I was about 7 years of age.
He dared me. Said I couldn’t hit the target in the first shot. Hee hee. I did of course. I only took one shot. Hit that target and and gave him back his pistol.

This morning we went to church. It was a nice service. When we first got there, someone asked me if I would be willing to do the children’s ‘time’ at the front of the church which they do each Sunday. The women who usually does this wasn’t there today, so would I be willing to fill in. We’re still relatively new to this church, but I am NOT new to NOT enjoying speaking in public. However, as about a thousand excuses ran through my mind of why I SHOULD NOT do this, including “I really do NOT like speaking in front of people!”, I found myself saying, “OK”. First I actually tried to convince Alesia that she could do it! Hee hee. She, like her mother, does not care to do any sort of public speaking and quickly said “NO!” and I realized how could I expect her to be willing if her own mother wasn’t?! I also realized if a homeschooling mother of 5 children can’t find something to do/teach/read/say to a small group of children at the spur of the moment, in front of the church, there really wasn’t hope for anyone, so how could I say no.

Besides, it’d be like a lot of our class lessons.

Me, flying by the seat of my pants, teaching a small group of children something in a matter of a few moments of time.

    Hee hee.

A quick browse through their bookshelves , I found a Precious Moment’s book of Bible Stories, and I knew I’d be ok. It was something to start with. It was Easter! How much easier could you get on a Sunday morning?

I just kept telling myself to only look at the kids, pretend like NO one else was there, and just do it. I can handle talking to kids. That I can do. Talking to adults, well that’s a whole other story and I didn’t even want to think about it.

I did it, and it was fine, I actually survived and lived to tell about it.

Now we’re home, we dropped Alesia off at work, the turkey is in the oven, no one else can make it for dinner so it will be just us.

The nice thing is, the store Alesia works at is closing at 6 this evening so we actually get to have our Easter dinner all together.

    A Family Feast.

We’re going to decorate our eggs after I get a couple of hours of work done while the turkey cooks. I shared on facebook that we’ll be trying a real ‘tie dye’ egg decorating this time, with actual Ties!

    This blog shows you how!

  • Take away love and our earth is a tomb.

Take away love and our earth is a tomb.
                                                                       ~Robert Browning

Today, is Earth Day. I think that’s absolutely great, and we’ve been celebrating this week with some tips, photos and even some contests. I thank each one of you for participating and making this an awesome Earth Week!

I also thank you for sharing all your tips! I hope to highlight some of them in a future blog post but if you haven’t already read through the comments in the previous three entries, take a moment to do so when you can! Some great tips have been shared! I appreciate everyone taking the time in the busyness of our lives to leave their comments.

However, today is even more important to me personally for another reason.

    Today is Good Friday.

As Robert Browning wrote so many years ago,

Take away love and our earth is a tomb.”

On this Good Friday, and this Earth Day, I want you to ask yourself:

Is your personal earth, a tomb?

    Is it void of love?

    Have you been receiving love?

    Have you been giving love?

In today’s society we can so easily become SO self centered, so self absorbed.
We all have our own personal difficulties that it can often be hard to see life past our own circumstances.

Judgement can get in our way of being loving.

We are often judging others, who are not like ourselves. Can this be love?

A good friend wrote this on her facebook status the other day, I hope she doesn’t mind me quoting her:

I learn so much from the animals…the cows don’t look at the ducks wallowing in the mud or the chickens pecking in the manure and point out how stupid they are…and the fowl don’t call the cows brainless cud chewers….they’re all just being themselves & there’s no need to criticize or ridicule. Why can’t people be a little more like that?
    ~ Holly M.

Why can’t people be more like that?

    It’s a very good question.

I love today, Good Friday, because it reminds me of true love. Selfless love.

The greatest happiness in life is the conviction that we are loved — loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves.
    ~Victor Hugo

It is because I am loved, just as I am, and before I was even capable of loving, that Good Friday is so meaningful to me.

So today, on this Earth Day, this Good Friday, this Easter weekend, if your own personal earth is feeling somewhat like a tomb, stop for a moment, and ask yourself, if there’s any special way you can love this weekend without expecting anything in return.

Brighten up your Earth, your Life, by thinking of another.

Our society is so busy. Much too busy.

I am totally guilty of this myself, and often feel ashamed for not taking more time for others. I also never saw it more prevalent within my own life then when I was without my husband for three months. I was so grateful for the few friends who helped when help was needed, but often felt quite alone when no one was able to be there for us. It made me realize I need to change my own priorities, and teach my children better as well. I’ve failed miserably and often think of only myself instead of others. I’m going to keep trying though, and I hope you will too!

To you I wish a Happy Earth Day, and even greater still, a Happy Easter weekend!

May you feel love, and may the earth not be a tomb this wonderful season!

  • More earth week fun. A photo, a tip, a contest and yesterday’s winner.

    Today’s earth week photo:

This is one I captured just the other day.

For years, since I purchased my first ‘good’ camera, I’ve been trying to get a good shot of an eagle. We have a lot of them around here, including a family that live right across the road from our home. I hear them talking ALL.THE.TIME, yet, the elude me constantly when it comes to snapping photos of them.

Finally, the other day, as I drove my eldest to work, I saw an eagle sitting low in a tree right near our home. He was watching, and waiting, for the perfect time to swoop down for a snack that was on the road. I won’t say anymore then that…

I knew by the time I got back, he might actually still be in that tree, so I hoped, and prayed, that he’d stay put, keeping watch, until I made the 20 min drive back home.

Sure enough, when I got back, he was still there!

I ran into the house, grabbed my camera, and ran down the road to where he sat in the tree. I quietly got closer but he spotted me, and watched. I could tell he wasn’t going to stay where he was. He didn’t feel safe so low on the tree, from this predator who was much larger then him. Even at his massive size.

I got ready to snap some photos. I wanted photos of him taking off, and in flight. He did not disappoint, and neither did my camera.

This is my favorite shot, it focused right in on his eye.

To view it in it’s larger size, just click the photo:

It’s still not in it’s original size, so you still don’t get a good view of his eye but it gives a better idea then the smaller version.

    ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

    Today’s earth week tip:

Instead of using disposable cotton balls, and/or cosmetic pads, go re-usable!

Many customers have shared how much they LOVE using Homestead Emporium’s re-usable cotton balls instead of throwing away disposable cotton balls and cosmetic pads.

Like the facial mitts, our re-usable cotton ball design came about as we tried to go ‘green’ and stop throwing things away.
It also came about because of my desire to not throw away smaller pieces of fabric within the business, that otherwise would have no real purpose and might end up in the landfill.

When you purchase re-usable cotton balls, not only are you saving yourselves from throwing away cotton balls/cosmetic pads, and your money,  you are also helping Homestead Emporium re-use.
    Everything here has a purpose!

You might be interested to know that our family of seven, plus the business, only throws away as much garbage as one average sized family. We re-use and recycle anything and everything we possibly can.
When we can’t recycle or re-use, we  usually get creative and figure out something unique (such as our cotton balls, which we’ve been making for years) to end the cycle of throwing things away.

I always get a little miffed when I read negative comments being made about large family’s and their eco footprint.
Just because a family is large, does not immediately mean they have a larger footprint. It’s all about holding oneself accountable to what they use, and what they waste.
One family of 2 – 4 persons can EASILY throw away much more then our family of seven WITH a home business.

It’s got nothing to do with the family size. It’s got everything to do with each family’s determination to make a difference!

    ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

    Today’s earth week contest:

My little one loves to help clean, so I take full advantage by giving him a spray bottle of water and a cloth rag. That way, everything gets a wipe down fairly frequently, and I can come by and take care of the rest. This also keeps him occupied while I cook.

  • In honor of Earth Week, nature, tips, and a give away!

In honor of Earth Week, which is this week if you didn’t already know, I’m going to post THREE things each day for the next few days.

First, I’ll post at least one photo of nature. I love nature. Can’t get enough of it! It’s what I snap most of my photos of, besides my children that is!

Most likely each daily photo(s) will be of an animal or a flower, as they are two of my favorite things about nature.  Such beauty and such unique differences in any one of the species of animals, or flowers! They simply astound me!

Then, on the more practical side, I’m going to post at least one tip each day on how you, and I, can help the earth!

Then, just for fun, and to help YOU help the earth, I’m going to give away something that is earth friendly!

    Today’s photo:

While on our recent house/farm hunting trip, the last destination was the Greater Vancouver Zoo. I’m not real fond of zoo’s, I have mixed emotions when I go to them. Awe at the animals, and then sadness at seeing them in cages, and then awe that “I” get to see them up close and personal at all.

While we were at the zoo, my main goal was to get just ONE photo, one GREAT photo, of a giraffe.

I love giraffe’s, with their great big eyes, and their beautiful long eyelashes. They are one of the most unique animals! With their spots, long necks, and those eyes. I just can’t get over those eyes.

The zoo we were at, didn’t lend itself very well for ‘great’ photos. I wanted that ‘safari’ feeling, not a caged up animal feel, to my photos. The giraffes were about the last animals we got to and by this time I was feeling rather disheartened about getting any great shots of any animals, let alone the giraffes. However, much to my surprise, for the giraffe pen they had a ‘look-out’, in which you could stand and snap photos! I was elated!

There was a mama giraffe, a baby and what I presume to be the father giraffe. When we arrived to their pen they were ALL inside. Once again I felt disheartened. And then…

Mama and baby came out to visit!

And baby had a snack while we were watching. I love nursing photos.

    Playful.

    For today’s earth ‘saving’ tip:

I wanted to share why, and how, I came up with the design for our facial mitts.

For quite some time, I had been using the disposable facial cloths. The type that lather when you add water. I loved these cloths, and how clean my face felt after using them.

However, I didn’t love throwing them away. I’d use them to their fullest potential. Cutting them in half and only using half a cloth each night before bed.

Then when I was done using that half cloth, I’d rinse it out and use it to wipe down the sink, and anything else in the bathroom that needed a quick wipe down!

I felt a little better about using disposable cloths, but I still didn’t like creating more garbage, or throwing away money!

So, the Homestead Emporium facial mitt was born.

One side with terry, either bamboo or cotton, for gentle exfoliation.

    mitt 1

The other side with bamboo velour, either hand dyed, or natural, for a very soft and gentle wash.

    mitts

Nothing is more gentle on the skin then bamboo velour! It’s pure luxury!

So now, instead of throwing away my facial cloths, each night I use a facial mitt to gently scrub my face clean, and then wash it away. I give it a good rinse out, and hang it up in the bathroom to air dry and use it a couple of more times before tossing it in the wash. I’m only using it for my face, so I feel there’s no need to wash it after each single use.

So what products do I use to wash my face?

I simply use soap. One that is gentle, and compatible with my skin.

Afterwards I put on a natural vitamin e based cream and my skin always feels soft and healthy.

At 40 years of age, I can proudly say that I hardly have any wrinkles either, and this has been my wash routine for quite a few years now, ever since we first started creating and selling the facial mitts.

Even when I was using the throw away cloths, I didn’t use them all the time simply due to the expense, and the guilt I’d feel over throwing them, and our hard earned money, away.

I’ve also never used anymore on my face then simply a fairly natural, fairly light weight, vitamin based cream.

No expensive creams for me, and nothing goes on this face that has ingredients I can’t pronounce!

  • Too many rambles.

I had planned to post photos of our zoo visit from the end of our recent house/farm hunting excursion today but I’m simply not in the mood so I’m just going to post some total recent randoms instead.

Yesterday a dear friend passed away after a battle with cancer. I am so sad that he has passed away, but so glad he did not suffer for much too long at the end. When we visited him last week, he was still able to bounce right up on his feet from a chair and walk us to the door. That was just one week ago. Now he is gone.

He was a good friend, a good man, and will be missed. He was also Elsa’s favorite person in the world. We don’t even know why really, it wasn’t that he treated Elsa differently from anyone else or gave her special attention. She just bonded with him. Elsa is our aspie child and really doesn’t “like” all that many people, and when she does, she doesn’t really say so. But this friend, whom she’s known since she was just 1 year old, she always remembered, and always spoke about, even when we would sometimes go a year or more at a time without seeing him.

I snapped the above photo a few weeks ago, with my tiny point and shoot camera, on my way home from visiting our dear friend who passed away yesterday.

Our son Joshua purchased one of our dear friends motorbikes.Joshua has wanted a motorbike for years. We always said no. There’s no doubt bikes are dangerous. This time we said  yes. Our dear friend who passed away was selling all of his beloved belongings. The bike is more then “just” a bike. It’s a memory. Joshua has plans to redo the paint job on the bike and add to the new paint job, “In memory of D___”. The bike will be a project for quite a while and it will probably be a couple of years before Joshua ever rides it. In the meantime, he’ll put his hard work, and love, into it.

I think we have a great son. He’s proven he’s got a good head on his shoulders, and an even better heart. He makes us proud.
We were supposed to go visit our dear friend yesterday afternoon after church. Instead, we were stuck at home cleaning, for a showing, in which the viewers showed up almost an hour early, while we were still cleaning, AND then never even stepped foot in our home. Needless to say, we were not impressed.
I hate to vent here on my blog, but I’m mentioning this in hopes that if you’re a realtor, or someone looking at places to buy, consider the person’s/family living in the home you’re going to view before you disrupt their lives. They may just miss out on something important, like seeing a sick friend one last time. The realtor should have done their homework and checked to see first if the property was even what her clients wanted. It saves lots of time, and even sometimes, like in this case, some heartache.

We must always remember, our daily actions don’t always just involve us. We need to consider those who are also involved in the reactions of our actions.

I posted on my facebook yesterday about the dangers of cleaning. The kitchen faucet attacked me and broke my gold chain. My precious cross pendant which my husband lovingly gave me for Christmas a few years ago because I said that was all I wanted in life, a small gold cross to wear around my neck, to show the world that like my faith, it may look small and subtle, but it’s ever lasting and always there.
The pendant slipped right off that gold chain and straight down the drain.

I’m not a very emotional person, but when I watched that pendant fall straight down the drain, I let out a loud cry that brought the kids running. I also cried out, “Why?! Why does this have to happen NOW?! I’ve been so careful all this time!!”

Then I stopped panicking, took a breath, shut off the dishwasher, made sure no water was running, and checked in the cupboard under the sink. Sure enough, there was a big elbow and a drain clean out in the pipe. I said a quick prayer that my cross would be there, tried to unscrew the clean out myself, failed, called my husband to come inside and help, and he saved the day.
Now I just need to have my chain fixed, and once again my neck will no longer be naked.

Spring has sprung here. Sort of. It can’t quite make up it’s mind. It sounds like the same thing is happening everywhere this year.
On a totally different topic, I just took a sip of my coffee and my lips were met with a piece of slimy chicken skin. Isn’t that lovely?

Thankfully, I had just been eating fried chicken from last night’s leftovers. I guess a piece of skin fell off…

My puppy is a humongous 2.5 pounds now. Full grown. He’s also 7 inches tall.
~Last night I didn’t get to sleep until almost 1am. I knew I had to get up at 6:30am to have Alesia to work for her 7am shift. I finally fell asleep only to wake at 2:47am. Then I laid there for over an hour realizing that this is what insomnia must be like. When I finally fell asleep again, I had stupid, stupid, awful dreams. One of the stupid, stupid, awful dreams involved our friend that died yesterday. Another involved a bat attacking me.

I hate stupid, stupid, awful dreams. I should have just gotten up and started my day at 2:47 am.
Now I should get to work. I’m working my way through as much odds and ends of fabrics as I can to save myself from packing and moving them when our place sells.
My shoulder hurts from all the cutting. I wish my electric cutter was a little more ‘finessed’ so I could do smaller cuts with it!
~This afternoon when I pick up Alesia from work, we are going to her co-workers place to snap photos of their new foal. If they turn out, I’ll share some here.

My wordpress blog is peeving me off. It keeps squashing my paragraphs together instead of leaving spaces…

I think that’s more then enough rambles for one post. Signing out now.
